Winston, Manziel, Mccarron Finalists for Maxwell Award

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel and Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron are finalists for the Maxwell Award, given to college football's player of the year.

Winston, who is being investigated in a sexual assault case by authorities in Tallahassee, Fla., is also up for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, with McCarron and Manziel.

Manziel won the O'Brien in 2012, along with the Heisman Trophy.

The finalists for nine awards will attend ESPN's College Football Awards show Dec. 12 in Orlando, Fla.


Senior tailback Damien Williams is no longer with the team. Coach Bob Stoops announced Williams' dismissal. Williams, from San Diego, had been suspended for a game Saturday at Kansas State and earlier served a one-game suspension against Tulsa.

Eastern Michigan

Police arrested two people in the fatal shooting of a player at an off-campus apartment complex, the school announced. One suspect was arraigned Sunday and the other Monday in the slaying of receiver Demarius Reed.


A staff member and former NFL player Matt Sinclair were charged with two felonies after allegedly pointing an unloaded handgun at a vehicle carrying other staff members, authorities said. Sinclair was arraigned on two felony counts of unlawful use of a weapon. Sinclair, a Champaign resident, was arrested Saturday as he drove his truck home from Illinois' game at Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. Someone called police around 4 p.m. Saturday to report a driver pointing a gun out of a truck on Interstate 74 in eastern Illinois. After police arrested Sinclair a short time later in Urbana, "[Sinclair] told them it was a joke," police said.


Coach Mark Stoops suspended leading rusher Raymond Sanders for a game Saturday against Tennessee for violating a team rule. Sanders, who has a team-best 464 yards on 107 carries with three touchdowns, sat out most of the first half of a loss Saturday at Georgia in what the coach said afterward was for disciplinary reasons. …
