New North Hills Coach Sees Potential

Article excerpt

Upon arriving on the job in May, North Hills girls basketball coach Lauren Wilmus recognized the talent on her new team almost immediately.

That talent did not translate into results last season as the Indians finished 7-15 overall and went 3-9 in Class AAAA Section 3 to finish sixth in the seven-team section and failing to qualify for the WPIAL playoffs.

From talking to those around the program last year Wilmus learned that North Hills had problems holding onto leads late in games. The Indians lost seven games by single digits.

"They are talented kids," Wilmus said of her team. "I saw them play for the first time at a summer league game and you can see the talent is there. They just need to learn how to win. The pieces are there. We are starting to put it together, starting to buy in."

North Hills (4-3, 1-1) bounced back from a season-opening 53-45 setback to Mount Pleasant in the Franklin Regional tipoff tournament to defeat Jeannette, then won non-section games against Allderdice and Shady Side Academy.

The Indians opened section play with a 44-38 win against Pine- Richland last Thursday before losing to Shaler Area, 54-31, last week. They lost a close 39-35 decision to Moon Area Monday.

Wilmus knows a thing or two about winning. She was an assistant coach last season at Bishop Canevin. The Crusaders won the WPIAL and PIAA Class AA titles.

At North Hills, Wilmus is trying to get the program to the postseason for the first time since 2010. Two years ago the Indians did not win a section game and finished 3-18. They began to turn things around last season, remaining in playoff contention until the final two weeks of the season but a three-game losing streak to close out the season denied the Indians of a playoff berth.

Wilmus inherits two returning starters and they are in ideal positions for a coach trying to build a winner. …
