Driver in Fatal Crash Was Likely Drunk, Speeding, Police Say Accident Killed One, Injured Three Others

An Allentown man was likely speeding and drunk Sunday when he caused a three-car crash that killed one man and injured four others, according to court documents filed Monday.

Robert Freund, 21, faces charges of homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence, involuntary manslaughter and other crimes in connection with a crash near the intersection of Saw Mill Run Boulevard and Lewis Street in Duquesne Heights.

Pittsburgh police Sgt. Daniel Connolly wrote in a criminal complaint that police suspect Mr. Freund was speeding north on Saw Mill Run Boulevard about 9:15 p.m. when he lost control, crossed the median and collided with a Toyota Highlander, causing severe damage to its left side.

The driver of the Highlander, James Posey, 60, was trapped inside the car and died at the scene of the crash. He died from injuries to his head and chest, according to the Allegheny County medical examiner's office.

Also in the car with Mr. Posey were three others who were taken to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. …
