Dr. John Christoforetti and the arthroscopic hip surgery to correct femoralacetabular impingements ("Dealing With Hip Pain in the Young and Active," Dec. 23 Health) changed my life. Starting in 2005, I began experiencing horrible pain in my hip when doing certain activities like driving or walking after sitting for a while. I was an active 29-year-old who had competed nationally in judo and enjoyed hiking and golfing, and the pain began adding many limitations to my life.

By 2008 I couldn't sleep through the night and it was difficult to do just about anything. Dr. Christoforetti looked at my X-rays and did his mobility tests and knew I was suffering from FAI and likely arthritis in the joint. At the time, I had to do therapy and receive a steroid injection before having the surgery in order for my insurance to cover the procedure. The standard treatments did nothing to alleviate my pain.

Months of intense physical therapy following the surgery improved my mobility, but it was doubtful that I could continue in judo or other activities. …
