Clairton Bears Down to Win Two 3-Pointers Put Sewickley Academy into Overtime Hole

Clairton shocked many by advancing to the WPIAL Class A championship game last season.

Friday, the Bears took the first step toward what they hope will be another surprising playoff run.

Jaquan Ford scored 15 points and No. 10 Clairton beat No. 7 Sewickley Academy, 55-51, in a first-round game Friday night at Montour that stretched into overtime.

Clairton (10-6) advanced to the quarterfinals and will face No. 2 and defending champion Vincentian in a rematch of the 2013 title game.

Clairton's Rashead Pacley scored 14 points and Isaiah Hollis had 13.

Sewickley Academy (13-8), which took a 19-13 first-quarter lead, got a team-high 16 points from Anthony Muscato.

Clairton outscored Sewickley Academy, 13-9, in overtime after regulation play ended at 42-42. Pacley and Hollis made 3-pointers in the extra period.

OTHER CLASS A FIRST ROUND

* Lincoln Park 84, Mapletown 27: Maverick Rowan scored 23 points, Ryan Skovranko 17 and Antonio Kellem 14, as the No. 1 Leopards cruised to the win against the Maples (7-13) at Keystone Oaks. The Leopards outscored the Maples, 26-0, in the first quarter.

* Vincentian 85, Trinity Christian 44: Jay Cortese scored 18 points and Ryan Wolf added 15, leading the Royals (21-2) to a rout of the Falcons (9-14) at Fox Chapel. Vincentian led by 23 at the half and outscored the Falcons, 29-7, in the third quarter.

* North Catholic 75, Winchester Thurston 45: Timon Gribbin made seven 3-pointers and scored 24 points to lead the No. 4 Trojans (14- 9) to the win against the Bears (11-10) at North Hills. Ryan Kirby and John Savulchak added 18 points apiece for the Trojans. Tyler Coleman led the Bears with 19.

* Monessen 78, Eden Christian 54: At Chartiers Valley, the No. 3 Greyhounds (18-5) got 22 points from Clintell Gillaspie and 20 from Javon Brown to roll past the Warriors (9-13). Eden Christian was making its first WPIAL playoff appearance. Carter Ehms led the Warriors with 21 points.

* Wilkinsburg 74, Union 62: Isaiah Pete had 28 points, 10 rebounds and 5 steals to propel the No. 6 Tigers (13-7) to a victory against the Scotties (10-13) at Butler. …
