Professors Amanda Godley and Ashley Woodson dispute Tony Norman's contention that parents need to be more involved with their school- age children ("Vulnerable Students Need High-Quality Teachers," Feb. 26 letters). The simple truth is that good teaching is not enough.

The primary grades are more critical than anyone seems willing to acknowledge and provide the foundation for the entire rest of an individual's education, regardless of gender or race.

I tutor in a nearby school. I see a significant percentage of the children, especially the older ones, being inconsiderate and disruptive, and having the teachers at their wits' end. The rooms are extremely rich learning environments. The teachers care deeply about the kids and are really trying hard but are fighting an uphill battle. The problem simply compounds as the years go by.

Dedicated teachers, stimulating classrooms and new technologies are as close to an ideal learning environment as possible, except that the part of the equation consistently missing for the kids having the most trouble is involvement by the home. …
