Jeannette Goals Remain the Same

The seniors on the Jeannette girls basketball team have captured section titles in their first three years of high school.

Even with the graduation of Ciara Gregory, the all-time leading scorer in school history, the departure of coach Luann Mills, now coaching Latrobe, and a one-point setback at section foe Riverview in December, the expectations remain the same.

"All our seniors know is winning the section," first-year coach Adam Knaresborough said. "I know our seniors expect to win the section. Right now, we just want to play tough basketball."

Knaresborough coached boys basketball in Virginia for the past five years, but the 2002 Norwin High School graduate is plenty familiar with the tradition at Jeannette.

"At Jeannette, they win in everything," Knaresborough said. "They expect to win championships and section titles. We just want to play tough basketball and good team basketball. If winning the section comes along with that, that is great. We are just taking it one game at a time."

Jeannette is 4-4 overall and 2-1 in Class AA Section 3 headed into the new year. The Jayhawks dropped two games to open the season in the Franklin Regional tournament, losing to the host Panthers and to North Hills, two Class AAAA schools.

"We want to play bigger schools," Knaresborough said. "We never really looked at our record as being 0-2. It was a tipoff tournament, so we just said, 'Here is what we have to do better.' "

Jeannette bounced back to defeat South Allegheny, 60-37, to open section play. It then lost, 42-41, at Riverview in another section contest. It was a tough loss, as Jeannette led by two with two seconds remaining with Riverview headed to the free-throw line. Riverview made the first, missed the second, collected the rebound and scored a winning field goal.

"It really brought us closer as a team," Knaresborough said of the loss. …
