Slippery Rock University's Old Stone House offers a six-session cooking class on Early American hearth cooking at the open hearth in The Old Stone House built in 1822. Instructors will lead discussions on how food preparation and methods of preservation have evolved and how local and imported foods have influenced the American diet.

Classes will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays from Feb. 8 to March 15. Tuition is $150, including all materials and supplies, as well as a hearthside cooking recipe book.

The sister restaurant to Cioppino and Osteria 2350 in the Strip District, Osteria 100, at the corner of Wood Street and the Boulevard of the Allies, Downtown, has closed. The restaurant had been open since June 2012.

It occupied a beautifully reclaimed open space adjacent to the urban park of Point Park's "Academic Village" and had many fans of its simple, affordable fare, including some of the best beans-and- greens in the city. …
