CROSS COUNTRY: Ortiz won the state meet with a record time

Derek Jeter. Candace Parker. Mark Sanchez. Olivia Ortiz?

The Gatorade Company named Ortiz, a cross country and track and field standout at Lakewood Ranch High, the 2011-12 Florida Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year.

The award not only recognizes athletic excellence but also academic achievement and character on and off the course.

On the course, Ortiz won the Class 3A State Meet in 17 minutes, 39.35 seconds, the fastest time of any girl at the state finals on the Little Everglades Ranch course in Dade City. She also captured the Little Everglades Pre-State Invitational, flrunners.com Invitational, Disney Cross Country Classic, District 11 and Region 3 titles.

Following the state meet, the junior was selected to compete in the Foot Locker South Regional in Charlotte N.C., where she finished fifth with a time of 17:13. That earned Ortiz a chance to run in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships in San Diego, where she took 19th overall with a time of 18:05. …
