In honor of a lifetime of accomplishments, both military and civilian, retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Fredric Buckingham was inducted into the Wall of Warriors.The celebration dinner in his honor was Friday at the Cultural Center of Charlotte County.Buckingham is the fourth person to receive the honor from the Military Heritage Museum at Fishermen's Village in Punta Gorda. A bronze plaque with his image that details his career will be displayed there.During Buckingham's career in the Air Force, he commanded a C-130 flying squadron and all three stateside C-130 flying wings. He served as theater commander of airlift forces for both Operation Just Cause in Panama and Operation Desert shield in Saudi Arabia. He has flown more than 6,000 hours, including 680 combat hours in South Vietnam. He received numerous military awards, including the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit Medal, distinguished Flying Cross Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters and Air Medal with five oak leaf clusters.Buckingham served in the Air Force for 30 years before retiring in July 1994 and moving to Punta Gorda.Since 1999, Buckingham has been chairman of the Florida International Air Show. He also served on the board of directors of the International Council of Air Shows, is a past director of the National Board of Advisers to the Museum of Aviation Foundation in Warner Robins, Ga., and is a past trustee of the Military Heritage Museum.Friends and family members honoring Buckingham at the dinner included his wife of 48 years, Diane, brother George and friend Bucky McQueen, who were asked to speak about the retired general. All three brought about much laughter and applause before the podium was turned over to Buckingham.After thanking his 99-year-old mother, Marguerite, who sat at the family table, his wife and other family members, Buckingham joked with the audience, telling them he did not think the event was going to be a roast."I thank all of you for joining my family and I tonight," he said. "We even have friends from my hometown in Indiana that traveled here tonight for this great honor. …
