Currently, the official name of the tournament may be nearly as long as the player list, but expect that balance to shift dramatically as the date for the Sarasota Interventional Radiology/ Sarasota Vascular Specialist Wild Card Event (whew!) at The Oaks Club in Osprey approaches.The tournament winner's prize is intriguing and tennis players are usually procrastinators. So it should not be surprising that as the March 7 deadline to enter the tournament nears, there will likely be an influx of women to add their names to the entry list.Not often does a local wild card tournament offer the winner a spot into the main draw of a $50,000 women's professional event. But that's what the champion of the March 9-11 event at The Oaks Club receives -- a spot in the $50,000 Oaks Club tournament to be played March 25-April 1.A year ago, Caroline Dailey, a 16-year-old sophomore at Out-of-Door Academy, entered the wild card event to gain a little tournament experience. She ended up reaching the main draw of the $50,000 event and took Japan's Erika Sema, the 91st ranked player in the world, to three sets before losing."It was an awesome experience," the Sarasota resident said about the opportunity.Dailey returns this year with the chance to defend her wild card title."We are excited to have Caroline Dailey return to the club," said Tom Whitten, tennis director at The Oaks and tournament director.Dailey will be joined by several area players, including Brittany Lashway, who has played the wild card event three times, and Taylor Lederman, who lost last year in the quarterfinals. Among the other early entries are sisters Mari and Naomi Osaka of Pembroke Pines, and Rhoda Chebet Tanyi, Lauren Proctor and Montana Moore of Bradenton. The wild card runner- up receives a spot in the qualifying tournament for the main event. …
