CLASS 2A-11: Soph. leads team to first title in 9 years

They say that Florida has no change of seasons, but that rule definitely does not apply to Lemon Bay High sophomore Yuki Fujii.

Fujii, all of 5-foot-5 and still just 15 years old, is either hitting a golf ball (fall), kicking a soccer ball (winter) or swinging a tennis racket (spring).

On Tuesday, he and his teammates were doing some weightlifting - holding aloft the Manta Rays' first district tennis championship trophy in nine years, as doting parents, friends and acquaintances seemingly couldn't take enough photos at the Englewood Sports Complex.

"I'm always telling (Yuki), don't be so nice," said first-year Lemon Bay boys coach Sally Lutz. "Ninety percent of the game is mental. But he's a good kid. They all are."

Fujii - just 4-6 against Lemon Bay's difficult schedule - had a lot to smile about after beating both of the top two seeds in No. 4 singles, then teaming with sophomore Andy Kapplemann, who also won in No. …
