CLASS 2A-3: Team beats Gateway, but boys fall to Griffins

When Lemon Bay High sophomore Linda Antonova plays doubles with her younger sister, Vicki, the two like to say to each other, "Together Forever."

It is a reference, usually in a funny voice, to the movie "The Princess Bride."

Unfortunately, the Manta Rays' girls' and boys' cannot be together forever -- or even for Thursday's Class 2A-Region 6 tennis championship. Not after visiting Fort Myers Gateway Charter's boys walloped Lemon Bay 7-0 at the Englewood Sports Complex in Tuesday's semifinals.

Four miles away at Lemon Bay, however, the Antonovas and their teammates put a similar hurting on the Griffins. Seven up, seven down.

Linda pitched a shutout, dispatching Val Valade 6-0, 6-0. Vicki was nearly as flawless, routing Sam Scarlett 6-1, 6-0. Then the sisters joined forces and beat Valade and Scarlett 8-1 in doubles.

Pretty impressive, considering the sisters already have qualified for doubles competition at the FHSAA Florida Finals at Sylvan Lake Park in Sanford (April 16-18). …
