CLASS 3A-REGION 3: Cougars advance with win over St. Pete Northside Christian

SARASOTA

Cardinal Mooney has granted Bradenton Christian its wish for a rematch in the FHSAA Class 3A-Region 3 semifinals after the Cougars, behind the 14-strikeout performance of sophomore Natalie Maglich, defeated St. Petersburg Northside Christian 8-3 Wednesday in a regional quarterfinal.

The Cougars (16-8), who won a regional game for the first time in 11 years, will host the Panthers -- whom Cardinal Mooney has beaten three times -- on Friday at 4:30 p.m., in a rematch of their District 10 championship game. Cardinal Mooney won that game 8-2, and it left a bitter taste with Bradenton Christian.

"Last time, their coach came up to our coach and said, 'Uh, we'll see you Friday.' No 'good game,' no anything," said Cardinal Mooney junior left fielder Kayla Scofield, who was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored against Northside. "He just said, 'We'll see you Friday.' So we're kind of stoked about that. We're excited to beat them again."

Bradenton Christian, the District 10 runner-up, advanced with an 8-7 victory over District 9 champion St. Petersburg Catholic on Wednesday.

"They beat the district champion up there, so they're going to feel they're there and they're going to come to play," said Cardinal Mooney coach Don Congdon.

"If we beat them, a fourth time beating them, we can make it far," said Maglich, who will take the mound again Friday against the Lady Panthers, who thought they would have beaten Cardinal Mooney in the district final, except for what they believed were some unfavorable, pivotal umpires' decisions.

"A couple bad calls. But I mean, bad calls don't make the game," Maglich said. "You gotta just play your game."

Maglich struck out the first six batters, and held Northside hitless for the first 22/3 innings before Katheryn Brown connected for a two-run doubled to pull the Lady Mustangs (15-8) within a run. …
