It is Memorial Day, a time

Remembering fallen soldiers and their sacrifices

too brief, like the lives of fallen soldiers -- for honoring the nation's war dead.

And while the promise of a foreseeable end to America's current war, in Afghanistan, has been made, it comes too late for too many of our troops and their families.

Last Monday, President Barack Obama and the leaders of America's NATO allies announced an agreement to end their lead role in Afghanistan by the summer of 2013. By then, they said, the mast majority of U.S. troops will come home.

But that's of little consolation to the families and friends of soldiers who have died in Afghanistan or anywhere else that our military stand in harm's way.

For those loved ones -- and for those who cherish the memories of soldiers who fell in past wars -- Memorial Day will be a time of grief and loss. Pride, too.

For those of us who don't serve in the armed forces and aren't personally connected to those who do, soldiers' deaths may be abstract. …
