SARASOTA -- Remember the parking meter nightmare?

Those pesky machines that gobbled your credit card, but didn't give you a receipt? The ones with the screens you couldn't read in the sunlight? The machines city commissioners installed last year, switched off, then removed, then reinstalled, then removed again?

If you're still holding a grudge, Sarasota Commissioner Shannon Snyder wants to give you a chance to blow off some steam. He wants to take them down the shooting range and let you shoot them dead with bullets.

"I think it'd be a great charity event," said Snyder, a former sheriff's deputy, serious as if he were giving a parking citation.

He offered the idea of $5 for a shot and the satisfaction of letting everyone who hated them "go down there and shoot them up."

Other commissioners laughed. So did the crowd. Snyder didn't.

The meters are still here, some on sidewalks with bags over their heads, statuesque reminders of how the notion of $1 an hour sent shock waves through this community. …
