Ringling Museum Gains 'Potent' Photo Collection

A collection of more than 700 photographs, many of them photojournalism, has been donated to the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art by Warren and Margot Coville.

The collection includes photography by Berenice Abbott, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Andre Kertesz and Herb Kratovil, among many others.

A selection of the photographs will go on display in November; in the meantime, curators at the museum are reveling in the gift.

The collection spans the 20th century but ceases after Sept. 11, 2001, said Matthew McLendon, associate curator of modern and contemporary art. There are "haunting images" of the World Trade Center falling, he said.

The Covilles have homes in Sarasota and Bloomfield Hills, Mich., where many of the images have been displayed.

"Margot and I are proud to join the reblossoming of the John and Mable Ringling Museum's collection," Coville said in a statement. "Now as residents of Sarasota, we will have the pleasure of revisiting images from our collection. …
