Gause Retains District 4 Seat; Runoff in No. 2

MANATEE COUNTY

In a result that could be crucial to the future of Superintendent Tim McGonegal, incumbent Bob Gause defeated local Tea Party favorite Linda Schaich in the race for the Manatee County School Board District 4 seat.

Meanwhile, the race for the District 2 seat will go to a runoff in November after Bradenton attorney David Miner topped the count but failed to earn a clear majority.

Miner will face Lakewood Ranch High political science teacher Robert Moates, who placed second, in the general election.

Paul Sharff, CEO of The Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County, placed third in the seat vacated by retiring Board Chairman Harry Kinnan after 14 years in office.

Palmetto High School math teacher William Chaltis was last.

Gause, who has served six years on the board, has often been the swing vote on a group divided between former educators and budget hawks.

Despite some disagreements, he is considered a McGonegal supporter. The superintendent has had public spats with other board members who frequently vote against him, often leaving him with a 3- 2 margin of support.

Gause's opponent, Schaich, has frequently lambasted school administrators for running a deficit in the district's health insurance fund and for not lowering property taxes. …
