SILVER ALERT: Family seeks help in locating vanished Newton Whidden

SARASOTA COUNTY

The family of a missing and endangered 85-year-old Sarasota man has issued a special appeal for help.

Newton Whidden was last seen Aug. 22 at a Sarasota pharmacy, where he left his cellphone.

His white van was found last week near the city of Okeechobee, more than 100 miles east of Sarasota.

Three days of searches near Okeechobee, which included helicopters, ATVs and deputies and volunteers on foot, produced no results. Last week, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office issued a Silver Alert on Whidden, asking for the public's help in finding him. Silver Alerts are used to broadcast information about missing persons -- especially seniors with Alzheimer's disease, dementia or other mental disabilities -- in order to aid in their return.

Whidden, who also goes by "W.H." or "Newt," is in very good health, said daughter Linda Oelschlaeger, although he has some "confusion" due to his age. …
