Kitchell a Regular at Nationals

Article excerpt

Sarasota's Jim Kitchell loves bowling and the open road, so he decided to combine the two back in 1983 when his voyage began. The 68-year-old recently received a plaque and patch for participating in 30 consecutive United States Bowling Congress/ABC National Tournaments.

"I'm already signed up for next year in Reno and hope to continue, if my health permits," he said. His first was back in 1983 when the New Jersey native had a friend who owned a business in Trenton sponsor his team's trip to nationals in Niagara Falls. The trip only cost him $125 since he decided to drive.

"I never thought I would last this long," he added. "From there, it just took off. Each year, I tried to find reasons to not go, but I always went."

His same friend still sponsors him, only his teammates have changed over the years. Since he has been in Sarasota he has recruited Bob Feather, Dan Church, Ed VerVane, and Pat Welch to also take the annual trek.

His best finish came in Salt Lake City, Utah back in 1996 when he rolled a 750 series in the singles category to finish 59th out of 14,000 bowlers.

"The tournament has given me the opportunity to visit states in America that I probably would have never gone to," said Kitchell, who was in Baton Rouge, La. for the 2012 USBC National tourney when he was honored.
