SARASOTA

Sarasota Hardware & Paint Co. is scheduled to shut its doors in mid-November, after 78 years in business.

The 5,000-square-foot store, at 1554 Main St., is the latest iconic downtown business to announce its closing recently, following the Golden Apple Dinner Theater and the Super Value Nutrition store, which is moving.

Combined, the three have been open downtown for 150 years.

Sarasota Hardware owner Jim Krill said that the business was hurt by the drop-off in construction in Sarasota County brought about by the Great Recession, which began in 2007.

"Construction in Sarasota has not been what it once was in many years," said Krill, who added that supplying contractors with tools and supplies made up the bulk of his business. "Retail was always secondary to us, we never focused on what you could get from places like The Home Depot."

Sarasota Hardware becomes the third business to announce plans to leave downtown within the past month, moves that could, ultimately, further the evolution of Main Street and the surrounding downtown area into more of a pedestrian-oriented, recreation-based destination.

Krill, 65, and his wife, a retired Sarasota County school teacher, plan to retire to North Carolina. They chose not to sell the business, but instead close it, since the store has been in the family since 1934. The building housing Sarasota Hardware, however, will soon be going up for rent.

Going out of business sales will take place until the store closes.

The Golden Apple was evicted in early September, and the Super Value Nutrition store, which also houses a U.S. Postal Service office, is moving to 4892 S. Tamiami Trail at the end of October.

"I'm not leaving downtown by choice," said Doris Shields, owner of the 3,200-square-foot store.

Shields said she is leaving 1461 Main St. after 33 years because of a dispute with her landlord. …
