CLASS 7A-11: Pirates have lost five matches against the 'Canes this season

After Monday night's victory in the first round of the Class 7A- District 11 volleyball tournament, Braden River High can only hope the sixth time proves to be the charm.

Led by seniors Courtney McDevitt and Demi-Shay Watchorn, host Braden River defeated Port Charlotte 25-20, 25-13 and 25-20 to capture the match and continue its season for at least one more day.

Braden River (17-9), the No. 3 seed, will play its district semifinal game tonight at 7 at Manatee High, the tournament's No. 2 seed.

It will be the sixth volleyball match between the two schools this season.

The Lady Hurricanes won the first five.

"We just keep preaching that it's the last match against them that matters," Braden River volleyball coach Matt McElhiney said. "They're a great team. We just have to step up to their level."

Braden River defeated Port Charlotte in the lone match between the two teams during the regular season. …
