OVERHEAD DOOR COMPANY: Cause of blaze at Sarasota business not yet known

SARASOTA

An evening fire destroyed the Overhead Door Company's headquarters, but the family business was back up and running on Tuesday morning, albeit from across the street, on cell phones set to take calls made to the office line.

"We're just sitting out in the parking lot taking phone calls and writing up orders," said one employee who answered the telephone.

The damaged building was used to keep an inventory of garage doors and an office, said Derek Stottlemyer, whose family has operated the business since 1961.

Sarasota County fire marshal Don Damron said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

"It was 4-alarm fire," Damron said. "That's as big as you can get."

The fire started at 6:10 p.m. Monday in the building at 1249 Stringfield Ave., across from Ed Smith Stadium.

Damron said the building was totally engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived and that it took about three hours to get it under control. …
