Dunlap Advances to Final Stage of Qualifying School

Article excerpt

Scott Dunlap turns 50 next August, and it almost seems like he has been playing golf for 50 years.

Some 40 years ago, his parents lived across the street from Bobby Jones Golf Club, would drop him off at the 45-hole complex and pick him up after eight hours of playing 36 holes of golf.

In 2011, he was one of the area's biggest golf stories of the year when he qualified for the PGA Tour on his umpteenth try at age 48. He did it by firing five rounds in the 70s before a final-round 68 in the final stage of Qualifying School in December, which earned him his tour card for 2012.

His hot streak did not carry over to 2012. Dunlap missed the cut in nine of his first 11 starts but rebounded by making the cut in his final five regular season events -- still, too little too late.

So back to Qualifying School he went. The valedictorian of his Sarasota High graduating class has no quit in him. On Friday, he shot a 67 to finish second in the second stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School, enabling him once again to reach the six-round final stage and giving him another shot at the lucrative PGA Tour.

Dunlap, who hung tough with Tiger Woods in the 2000 PGA Championship, could again be playing on the PGA Tour next summer, the same year he is eligible for the Champions Tour. It should not be surprising to many Sarasotans who know him. From the days when his parents (Bill and Bunny) dropped him off at Bobby Jones, he never stopped playing golf, winning tournaments in six countries. Now living in Duluth, Ga., Dunlap is the only golfer with area ties to qualify for the final stage to be played Nov. 28-Dec. 3 at the PGA West TPC Stadium Course in LaQuinta, Calif.

Seath Lauer of Lakewood Ranch, Devin Spies of Osprey, Sam Osborne of Palmetto, Joe Monte of Lakewood Ranch, Sebastian Mark of North Port and Hampton Ballard of Bradenton all failed to advance. …
