Fundraising Ideas for Relay for Life

Article excerpt

With donations averaging $5 to $10, the goal is to raise $350,000 during the Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

Relay volunteers from all walks of life recently gathered for a Jingle Mingle event at Trinity Methodist in Bradenton to plan the annual event and talk about ways to raise money.

"Relay for Life is an 18-hour journey, walk, that mirrors the cancer patients' journey," explained Christina Behr, a community representative with the American Cancer Society.

At the Jingle Mingle, high school students, individuals and business representatives exchanged money-raising ideas. They talked about bake sales, car washes, "keep the change" competitions and rides on a mechanical bull.

"We're just in the starting gate," said Lora Mendoza of Lakewood Ranch High School.

During the Relay for Life, teams camp out at local high schools and parks and take turns walking or running around a track or path for up to 24 hours.

Each team lines up fundraisers prior to the relay. Ninety percent of the money comes from teams, and another 10 percent is donated by corporate sponsors to cover event costs.

The relay is opportunity for people to share a common bond, one of hope for all cancer patients, survivors and loved ones lost.

"The relay is for my dad, mother and father-in-law," said Kim Bailey, representing the Care Childhood Christmas Team of Palmetto. …
