Grandmother's Gifts of Love, Hope and Good Advice

Article excerpt

Dear Kate, Emily, Logan, Adeline and Grayson,

As another year comes to a close and we prepare to celebrate Christmas, I am struck more so these past few days by the magnitude of the blessing each of you is to me, your grandmother, and indeed to all those important in your young lives.

Though a year must seem like a long time to you -- and the wait until Christmas, your birthday or any event you are anticipating almost too much to bear -- for me it is over in the blink of an eye. Yet each year holds some very special moments. In my annual letter to you I usually highlight some of those as a way of remembering and documenting our family history that can too easily get lost in the rush of life. But this year, I'd like to change direction just a little bit and focus on our collective aspirations for you, my dearest treasures. Aspirations is a big word that really means dreams, but not the kind we have at night that sometimes scare us. Rather they are the kind that paint a picture of how we would like to see our lives as we grow older. Let's consider how those aspirations might look.

First, I would hope each of you has the strength and confidence to be the person you believe lies in your heart of hearts. That might mean something very different from what your school friends or relatives expect and that is OK as long as your path is one you have chosen carefully with a clear head. I can't expect that path to be easy, though I might like that, but more importantly it should be purposeful. It should be headed toward a goal you feel is important and believe will have a positive effect on the world.

Sounds simple enough and yet there may be detours on that path that you cannot or did not anticipate. They may send you in a different direction and open new doors and that would be OK too. The opportunity to change course without lessening your resolve should be embraced.

Next, I hope you will surround yourselves with people who love you, support you and are honest with you. And I would hope you would be the kind of person who exhibits that same sort of commitment to those who are important in your lives.

May you have good health and still know when to seek help for concerns that could require medical attention. …
