Every winter brings a fresh influx of eager anglers to the Sarasota area who are brimming with questions regarding the essential gear and baits for saltwater fishing. The other big issue, of course, is where to fish.

Friends and neighbors can be a good source.

Virtually all of the folks working at bait and tackle shops from Bradenton south through Sarasota and Venice are happy to help steer newcomers in the right direction. Asking charter captains for their favorite lat/lon "numbers" is always guaranteed to invoke a hearty laugh around the shrimp tank.

One tried-and-true method is simply to fill the boat's gas tank and spend hours casting over grass flats looking for trout, into potholes around mangrove shorelines for snook, or on or around oyster bars where redfish like to hang out.

But perhaps the most valuable resource is the one you're holding right now: the weekly fishing report from many of the area's charter captains who not only provide information about the general spots that are producing fish, but also which baits have been working best for various species of fish. …
