Trip's Prize Was 69-Pound Cobia

Jim Hundley, from California, has caught a lot of fish during the years he's been coming to Florida. But last week's adventure tops anything else he's experienced so far.

FishFactor left Dockside Marine at 9 a.m. After a brief stop to net some live pinfish, the boat was secured near one of the M Reefs in 65-feet of water off Nokomis.

A few gag grouper that weighed 15 pounds were released, along with a couple of red grouper in the 9-pound class.

Things started to get interesting when a cobia and two amberjack all hit at the same time.

Drags were loosened, anglers were directed around the deck like a fire drill and finally all three fish were boated.

That, in itself, would constitute a successful day of fishing for most anglers. In reality, the fun had only begun.

Hundley and his fishing partners, Neal Staat, of Holland Mich,. Richard Wheeler, of Atlanta, and Bud Olson, of Calif., barely had time to slap each other on the back and catch their breath before the action kicked in again. …
