PATRIOT PLAZA: 'Legacy of Valor' campaign aims to drum up donations

SARASOTA

Seventeen local organizations and events, from the Chalk Festival to Habitat for Humanity, will join The Patterson Foundation's bid to promote patriotism in support of its innovative Sarasota National Cemetery Project.

Patterson's yearlong campaign, which it calls Legacy of Valor, will culminate in 2014 with the unveiling of Patriot Plaza, a $10 million amphitheater showcase constructed exclusively with private funding. Legacy of Valor is Patterson's complementary, $1 million networking project to generate awareness via community landmarks as disparate as Circus Sarasota, the Junior League, the Sarasota Film Festival and the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art.

Stressing Sarasota's "cultural assets," Patterson president and CEO Debra Jacobs announced on Friday that its goal is to ensure, through "an absolute tapestry of events," that all area residents will be informed enough to "attend, donate or volunteer" for whatever related events appeal to them.

The key, she added, is to form partnerships. For instance, Jacobs cited the cooperation of five regional Habitat for Humanity offices, which will now -- with an assist from Patterson -- begin coordinating their efforts to prioritize "various veterans repair projects."

The Legacy of Valor project has only begun to coalesce since January, so many details are vague at this point. But Patterson will be announcing additional partnerships in the coming months, and Jacobs adds: "We can work smarter, better, together. This is an important journey of co-creation and imagination."
