ODA Girls Cruise to Easy Region Win

1A-5: Thunder win every match; Falcons also advance

The Out-of-Door Academy girls tennis team had no trouble with Fort Myers Canterbury, sweeping their FHSAA Class 1A-Region 5 semifinal match 7-0.

And the District 9 champion Thunder don't expect much more difficulty in the Region 5 final on Thursday.

ODA won every match over the District 10 runner-up Lady Cougars Tuesday in straight sets and then easily won a pair of pro set doubles matches.

"They played beautifully," said ODA coach Noel Dougherty. "They had really clean matches, which is exactly what today was about."

The Thunder will host rival Saint Stephen's Thursday at 3:30 p.m. for the right to advance to the FHSAA 1A state tournament.

"We have one of the healthiest most intense rivalries with Saint Stephen's," Dougherty said. "I love playing them and I hate playing them. They bring out the best in us."

Saint Stephen's, the District 9 runner-up, defeated the District 10 champion, Community School of Naples, 5-2, in the other semifinal. …
