ABATE Delivers School Supplies

Article excerpt

The parking lot at the Charlotte County Teacher's Depot in Murdock filled up with motorcycles, cars and trucks as members of the Peace River Chapter of ABATE Florida put their kickstands down, ending their annual School Supply Run.

More than $1,000 in donations collected Aug. 25 included a $500 check from Wittmer/Linehan, a Sarasota law firm that specializes in motorcycle injuries.

"We make it a point to help out this group every year," said attorney Greg Linehan, who followed the run in his truck.

After the monthly chapter meeting at the Community Education Center in North Port, kickstands went up at noon. ABATE members and other bikers, cars and trucks hauling supplies left the parking lot and headed south on U.S. 41 to make a delivery to the Charlotte County Teacher's Supply Depot, 1445 Education Way, Port Charlotte.

The Charlotte Local Education Foundation website lets schools and teachers know what supplies are now available to be distributed to students still in need.

The teacher's depot will house the rest of the supplies, and teachers can shop there throughout the year.

The Peace River chapter that meets in North Port draws riders and nonriders from Englewood, Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte, North Port -- and even some from Sarasota.

"Our chapter supports the Charlotte County schools, while another ABATE chapter in Sarasota holds their annual run for the Sarasota County public schools," Tracy Lacourse said. "We are all doing our part to help the kids."

While any school supply donated is appreciated, the items in biggest demand are reams or boxes of copy paper and backpacks, especially at the start of the school year.

Wearing the backpacks to be donated while riding in the school supply run has become a tradition for some of the bikers.

Lacourse wore a pink and black backpack, and Andy and Gail Romano were wearing their colorful backpack donations decorated with peace signs and flowers.

ABATE is a nonprofit organization of motorcycle enthusiasts with a mission to lobby and educate both the government and the general public. …
