PORT MANATEE

One day after he was released from jail, Port Manatee CEO Carlos Buqueras was back at work overseeing the bustling seaport and its 70 employees.

Buqueras, 59, was arrested Saturday evening at his home in the 3800 block of 155th Avenue East in Parrish.

According to an arrest report, Buqueras and his wife Kimberly got into a dispute about household bills.

"Kimberly took off her wedding ring and threw it into the pool," the report states. "Carlos became enraged and pushed Kimberly to the ground and started to punch her. Carlos then dragged Kimberly into the house."

Deputies say Kimberly had a red abrasion on her back that was "consistent with her statement of being dragged." She reportedly refused medical treatment.

Buqueras was released from the Manatee County Jail on Sunday after posting a $500 bond.

"I'm back at work. I've got meetings all day," Buqueras said Monday morning.

He had no comment about the domestic violence allegations, and declined to say if he had retained an attorney.

As to what action he would take if one of his employees was arrested for domestic violence -- such as suspension -- Buqueras said, "I haven't had such an experience yet here."

"It would depend if it was job-related or not job-related. If it's a domestic matter, it's a domestic matter," he said.

According to records obtained from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, this is Buqueras' only arrest in Florida.

Contacted Monday morning, port spokeswoman Julie Yeh first said, "I have had better days."

Asked what action the port has historically taken when an employee has been accused of a crime of violence, Yeh said, "No comment -- I don't know the answer to that question."

Manatee County Commissioner Carol Whitmore, who chairs the Port Authority board, said the board plans no immediate action.
