3-0 START: Two long plays in fourth quarter seal win

For the first time since the Kickoff Classic against DeSoto County, Port Charlotte had to play four quarters to keep its undefeated season alive.

And the Pirates did just that with a strong fourth quarter finish in a 28-10 victory over Naples Lely High Friday night at the Pirates' Cove.

Port Charlotte led 14-10 after a scoreless third quarter and it looked like it would be a wild finish. Instead, it was two big plays that broke open a close game.

Junior Anthony Stephens' 70-yard run gave the Pirates some breathing room midway through the final period and junior Martin Luther's 36-yard run made sure Port Charlotte would go home winners.

Port Charlotte (3-0) dominated the first quarter on both sides of the football. The Pirates tallied seven first downs and 132 yards of total offense while holding Lely to just two first downs and 28 yards of total offense.

But while the Pirates were moving up and down the field against the Trojans, they could only manage to put seven points on the scoreboard as their opening drive of the game resulted in a blocked field goal. …
