EDDIE HERR: He gets in final after a marathon match

Alfredo Perez and Kalman Boyd spent the two weeks prior to the start of the Eddie Herr International Junior Tennis Championships pummeling each other in practice.

On Saturday, the two unseeded players took their friendly feud to one of the many hard-court surfaces at IMG Academy, where they wound up meeting each other in a semifinal match of the Boys 16-and-under division.

After beating the stuffing out of each other for two hours and 43 minutes, Perez finally emerged as the weary winner over Boyd 6-2, 4- 6, 6-4.

"I guess he was a little more tired than me," said Perez, who has spent the past six years living in Florida after growing up in Cuba. "It was good tennis. I just played a little better. It could have gone either way."

Boyd, who lives and trains in San Diego, looked like he was about to say good-bye to breakfast during the second set. Instead, he somehow pulled it together to win the set and make it tough for Perez in the third. …
