TOP WEIGHTLIFTERS TO WATCH

Gage Takacs

Southeast, Senior

Won the Class 1A 199-pound weightlifting title as a junior, benching 355 and lifting 315 in the clean and jerk. Takacs, who has been regularly clean and jerking 365 pounds at training sessions, will be at 219 this season. His goal is to repeat as a state champion with hopes of breaking the state record in the clean and jerk, which sits at 370 pounds.

Anthony Marinola Lemon Bay, Junior

Finished as runner-up in the Class 1A 139-pound weight class in 2013 with a 505 total, benching 280 and lifting 225 in the clean and jerk. He's already exceeded that, lifting 550 at the Sarasota Invitational on March 1. Will compete at 154 pounds this season.

Wicky Sanon

Sarasota, Senior

Finished 11th in the Class 2A 199-pound weight class last season with a 610 total, benching 360 and lifting 250 in the clean and jerk. Finished first at the Sarasota Invitational, where he lifted 620 total. Will compete in the same weight class this season.

Roman Morales

North Port, Senior

The 183-pounder won his weight class at the Sarasota Invitational, lifting 580 total. Did not qualify for states last season but coach Wayne Skelton is hopeful that he will make it this year and expects him to be at the 600 range at the county championships. Morales was a state qualifier in wrestling this year.

Jeff Burrell

Port Charlotte, Senior

This 183-pounder is benching 355 and 245 on clean and jerk. He scratched out at the Sarasota Invitational but won the Charlotte Invitational and the Port Charlotte Invitational and is also undefeated on the season.

Dylan Beauchamp

Manatee, Senior

This heavyweight qualified for states last year, where he benched 360 and clean and jerked 295 pounds for a total of 655 pounds. He scratched at the meet so he didn't get the chance to place but coach Rich Lansky says he should make it back again. Won the Sarasota Invitational on March 1 with a 675 total.

Billy Pesti

Charlotte, Senior

Pesti was a state qualifier in 2013 at 238 pounds and will also compete at that weight this season. …
