BASEBALL: Tornadoes get first district victory in seven years

SARASOTA -- Left-handed sophomore pitcher Hunter Johnson (2-4) struck out five and allowed just five hits to lead Booker (6-10, 1- 1) to its first district win in seven years, beating Tampa Berkeley Prep 1-0 Tuesday night in a baseball game.

Senior Armando Benitez went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. Sophomore Chris O'Connor went 1-for-2 with two runs.

Booker hosts Bradenton Christian Thursday at 7.

SAINT STEPHEN' S1

BRADENTON -- Matt Quinlan went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple to lead the Cougars (12-9, 6-2) to a Class 3A-District 10 win over the Falcons.

Taylor Garris went 2-for-5 with a four RBI while Robby Shay went 1-for-3 and added three RBI for the Cougars.

Pitcher Spencer Stevens (4-2) picked up the pitching win, striking out seven.

SARASOTA -- Pitcher Austin Hoppe struck out 10 and allowed just two hits in the Thunder's (12-3, 5-1) district win over the Panthers (13-6, 5-3). Out-of-Door Academy clinches the No. 1 seed in Class 3A- 10. Bradenton Christian falls to the No. 3 seed.

Out-of-Door's Trenton Radigan went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Teammate Jeremy Luna went 1-for-2 and added two RBI.

Luke Darnell went 2-for-3 for the Panthers.

Out-of-Door Academy hosts Sarasota Christian Thursday night at 7.

RIVERVIEW 1

BRADEN RIVER 0

BRADENTON -- Alex Detweiler threw a shutout, striking out six in Riverview's 1-0 win over Braden River.

The Rams (11-8) only run was scored after Spencer Wiseman led off with a walk and stole second base. Kyle Washburn then hit a single, putting Wiseman on third, allowing Washburn to take second on the throw back to home. Justin Cohen then hit an RBI sacrifice fly into right field to score Wiseman.

Riverview travels to Palmetto tonight at 7.

PORT CHARLOTTE 6

IDA BAKER 1

PORT CHARLOTTE -- Junior Donovan Petrey went 3-for-5 and drove in a run to lead the Pirates (10-8, 5-2) to a district win over Ida Baker.

John Tufano went 3-for- 4 for the Pirates. Freshman pitcher Matt LaPoint picked up the win in six innings.

Port Charlotte is on a four-game win streak.

SARASOTA CHR. 15

CENTRAL CHR.(OH)5

SARASOTA -- Sarasota Christian belted out 18 hits as the Blazers routed visiting Central Christian of Ohio.

Ryan Wenger led the offensive charge, going 5- for-5 with 3 RBI. Brady Weaver went 3-for -5 with 4 RBI. Teammates Joey Shamp went 2- for-5 and Grady Martin went 3-for- 3. Lance Helmuth contributed with 3 RBI on his double.

Weaver (2-0) got the win, pitching three innings.

Sarasota Christian (7-7, 5-0 district) plays at ODA on Thursday at 7 p.m.

SOUTHEAST 0

BRADENTON -- LaShara James went 3 for 3, including a grand slam, as Bayshore routed host Southeast in a game stopped after four innings.
