Right Place, Right Time for Oklahoma Clock Broker

For Jeff Bezdek of Bezdek and Associates, time is of the essence - literally.

Commissioned to create the Oklahoma Centennial Street Clocks by the Oklahoma Centennial Commission, Bezdek is working around the clock to finish the already-ordered 47 commemorative timepieces with the hopes of commissioning 100 by year's end.

For the 25-year-old Bezdek, the clocks represent not only the past, present and future of Oklahoma, but a way to bring together contractors, architects and artists to create a lasting legacy of history.

"My family has been in the bell and clock business since 1948," said Bezdek. "A friend of mine suggested that clocks would fit with the Centennial Commission and into what the centennial was about. Clocks are about time and history."

Bezdek met with the Oklahoma Centennial Commission about the idea of historic centennial clocks, and after receiving the go-ahead, Bezdek and Associates was created with the sole purpose of creating centennial memorabilia.

On Tuesday, one of the clocks, a four-face design, was unveiled just in time for the Big 12 basketball tournaments being hosted in Oklahoma City.

Taking the time

The Oklahoma Centennial Commission partnered with The Verdin Co. to develop the Oklahoma Centennial Street Clock design. Verdin is the world's largest supplier of clocks and bells, and Bezdek and Associates represents The Verdin Co. in Oklahoma.

Throughout Oklahoma, each community received a state appropriation to put towards centennial projects, and cities like Medford, Vinita and Oklahoma City chose the commemorative clocks as worthy projects.

"We've been working on the clock project for three years now," Bezdek said. "We started with three clocks for Oklahoma City. The city sponsored a clock at City Hall, at the ballpark and one at Capitol Hill on SW 25th Street"

From there, the project blossomed into nearly 50 clocks already. …
