Layoffs under Way at Paterson Schools

PATERSON - The city school district is issuing layoff notices this week to 335 employees, including 175 teachers and 116 instructional and personal aides, Superintendent Donnie Evans said.

In addition to the terminations, the district has another 213 vacant positions that it does not plan to fill for the start of the upcoming fiscal year, jobs that will not be formally eliminated, Evans said.

The total of 547 terminations and vacant jobs represents more than 10 percent of the district's workforce, a number more than 60 percent larger than what officials talked about when the 2015-16 school budget was adopted two months ago.

"That's staggering in its implications," said Jonathan Hodges, the school board president.

"It's devastating and it makes me angry," said Rosie Grant, director of the Paterson Education Fund, an advocacy group. "We're fighting a losing battle if we keep cutting the budget and keep cutting staff."

District officials issued most of the layoff notices to staff on Thursday, while some staff members had to wait until today to get their pink slips, Evans said. …
