Amedure Delivers in Clutch for Wa

When Tyler Amedure isn't at school or playing sports, he spends some of his time working as a pizza delivery driver.

On the baseball field, Amedure delivers big production for the defending WPIAL Class AAA champions.

Amedure is one of the top players for the West Allegheny Indians (13-5), who began defense of their district crown Tuesday with a first-round 6-0 victory against Kittanning. West Allegheny will play Hopewell in the quarterfinals on Monday at a site and time to be determined.

After putting together an outstanding junior season, Amedure's senior season hasn't gone quite as smoothly. That's not to say he hasn't been excellent, it's just that his role hasn't been in the same capacity as he had planned.

Amedure began the spring as a starting shortstop and the team's closer, but an arm injury sustained in a game against Montour on April 17 forced him to become strictly a designated hitter. Amedure, a right-hander, said a few ligaments in his arm became inflamed, forcing him to ditch pitching for the remainder of the season.

"Going from playing the field every day to going to the bench and hitting three or four times a game is a big change," said Amedure, an Oakdale resident.

Amedure hit .389 and scored 17 runs during the regular season, both of which ranked second on the team. Before getting injured, Amedure had not given up an earned run and had 12 strikeouts in 7? innings.

When discussing Amedure, it's difficult not to mention his height. Amedure is only 5 feet 4, which easily sets him apart from most, if not all, of the WPIAL's other standout players. But Amedure makes the most out of every inch.

"Pound for pound he's one of the best athletes we've had come through here as far as baseball goes," West Allegheny coach Bryan Cornell said. "He's extremely athletic. He can play any position. …
