Article excerpt

LADUE * A St. Charles man has been charged with attacking a man at a party in Ladue by stomping on his head.

The victim's aunt said he remained hospitalized Wednesday on a respirator, 10 days after the attack. He has undergone brain surgery and has boot marks on his face and chest.

Meanwhile, Darrian Johnson, 21, was being held Wednesday in lieu of $100,000 bail. He was charged with first-degree assault on May 6, a few days after the alleged assault in the 900 block of Barnes Road.

Johnson is on probation after pleading guilty to an attack on a man in St. Charles in 2013.

In the Ladue case, police say Johnson stomped on Brandon Pudlowski's head while Pudlowski was down on asphalt. Pudlowski, 21, underwent surgery for brain bleeding and brain swelling at Mercy Hospital St. Louis in Creve Coeur.

"This person just beat him and beat him and beat him."

Ladue Police Sgt. Greg Stork said the attack happened about 4 a.m. on May 3. Stork said Johnson and Pudlowski were among about eight people who went to the party together, though Pudlowski's family disputes that. Stork wasn't sure if the two men knew each other beforehand or simply had mutual friends in the group.

"They heard about the party on social media and showed up in Ladue about 1 a.m.," Stork said. "They all came together."

Stork said Johnson was making fun of a young woman at the party, and Pudlowski stepped in and came to her defense.

"It was a small scuffle at first," outside the home, Stork said. The young woman "went back inside to get her friends and when she came out, Pudlowski was on the ground unconscious. She and other friends put him in the car and took him to the hospital."

Police in Creve Coeur, where the hospital is located, notified Ladue police about the assault victim. Ladue police zeroed in on Johnson and, with the help of St. …
