Not All Stellar Performances Earned Gold

Article excerpt

North Jersey athletes collected seven gold medals and 43 total medals at Wednesday's State Meet of Champions, just one medal from tying the all-time North Jersey record.

Here are some of the better non-winning performances:

RECORD BROKEN: The Ridgewood 4-x-800 team of Michael Thurston, Brian Collins, David Frering and Luke Dublirer bettered the previous Bergen County record in finishing second to Bergen Catholic. The Maroons ran 7:44.09 while their rivals claimed the new county mark and the gold (7:42.95).

Annichiarico took silver, matching his indoor second place finish.

That makes them the early favorites for next year's race. Neither matched their Group winning times Wednesday, but both were pleased with their progress.

"I was happy with my year, because I kept improving," said Sellers.

"I'm just learning how to run this event," said Brzozowski. "But I'm going to keep at it.

SUCCESSFUL FINISH: Somehow Catherine Pagano of Northern Highlands had never earned a State Meet of Champions medal before her third- place finish in the 800 in a school record 2:08. …
