OAKLAND, Calif. - Nothing quite summed up the Yankees' deserted interest from Sunday's game like Carlos Beltran's eighth-inning stroll off first, when he was called out for abandoning a base.

By that point, manager Joe Girardi had already subbed out three prominent starters. And most of the Yankees had basically pre- boarded their cross-country flight home from a winning road trip that nonetheless began and ended on a disturbing low note.

Lefty starter Vidal Nuno took the Yanks out of it early, yielding eight runs over three-plus innings in a 10-5 Athletics victory at the Coliseum - a score that didn't match the full impact of the Yanks' defeat.

The AL-West leading A's (42-27) jumped to a 10-0 lead after four innings, leaving the Yankees (35-33) to assess a nine-game, three- city journey that contained a four-game winning streak book-ended by series losses.

After dropping two of three games at Kansas City, the Yankees earned a three-game sweep at Seattle and claimed Friday night's opener at Oakland before being outscored, 16-6, in two weekend losses.

It's daunting enough to face winning teams on the West Coast, "but when we were 5-2 and you have a chance to have a really good road trip, it kind of stings a little bit," Girardi said of the disappointing finish.

Trailing by seven runs in the seventh, Girardi had replaced Derek Jeter, Jacoby Ellsbury and Mark Teixeira, giving his veterans a rest.

Beltran remained at designated hitter, but his mind wandered off in the eighth.

"I thought there were two outs," Beltran said of coming to bat and grounding into a one-out force play at second base.

First base umpire Dan Iassogna watched Beltran wander toward the first base coaching box, and after a few seconds -- while A's pitcher Fernando Abad pointed in the direction of first base - Beltran was declared out for abandoning the bag. …
