Drug-Sniffing Dog Noses out Suspect and His Hummer

The Passaic County Sheriff's Office has arrested an alleged drug trafficker and may soon be augmenting its undercover vehicle fleet with his spiffy 2006 Hummer -- complete with secret drug compartment.

It's all thanks to the sensitive nose of Archie, the narcotics- sniffing Belgian Malinois dog, according to Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik.

The vehicle's driver, Darweesh Abdallah, 49, of New Milford, faces narcotics distribution charges, and authorities say they've taken a significant load of drug-making elements off the streets.

Berdnik said narcotics detectives from his office stopped the dark gray Hummer on Tuesday night as it was being driven in an erratic manner with a taillight out on Route 80 near Exit 60 in Paterson. Sheriff's Officer Jamie Tangorra, on K-9 duty in the area with Archie, responded to assist on the stop, Berdnik said.

At the scene, Archie's finely tuned sniffer took over and alerted officers to drug scent at the driver and passenger door seams, the sheriff said. …
