The Bergen County Protect and Rescue Foundation is now a participating animal shelter on the ResQwalk mobile application, enabling animal lovers to raise money for animal rescues and earn rewards every time they go for a walk. Available at the App Store. resqwalk.com.

The YWCA Early Learning Center is accepting registration for the 2014-15 school year for infant and toddler care, nursery school, preschool and pre-kindergarten, and all-day kindergarten at 98 Pleasant Ave., Upper Saddle River. The Gallen Adult Day Health Care Center at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh will offer a free support group for those caring for a relative or friend who is physically frail or suffering from Alzheimer's disease or related dementia from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 3 at 10 Link Drive. The Charles Lafitte Foundation will hold a national essay contest through Sept. 15. Students in Grades 3 through 12 as of September can enter the "Kid's Corner Summer Reading Adventure" essay contest for a chance to win $1,000 for their school library as well as a Kindle Fire. Students must read a book listed for their corresponding grade level and write about how the characters' strengths and flaws come together to make the entire person. Grades 3 to 5 can read "Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen or "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" by E.L. Konigsburg. Grades 6 to 8 can read "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury or "Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld. High school students can read "The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger or "The 5th Wave" by Rick Yancey.
