Plan Would Help Veterans Get Housing

PATERSON - Mayor Joey Torres wants to earmark $1 million in unused federal housing funds to provide between 18 and 38 new apartments for homeless veterans.

The mayor said he would use money awarded under the federal Home Investment Partnership program that had been earmarked for developments designed to bolster home ownership.

Torres said financial difficulties have prevented developers from getting the projects started and that the veterans housing program would provide support to help get them moving.

Under the plan, the Paterson Housing Authority would steer homeless veterans who qualify for federal housing vouchers to the projects being built with federal funds, Torres said. Those vouchers would provide the revenue stream that the builders need to get loans for construction.

"It sounds like a good initiative," said Tony Vancheri, president of the Paterson Veterans Council. "I hope he can provide some housing for veterans who need it."
