Drug Trafficker Gets 10 Years over Heroin at Son's Home

A Colombian drug trafficker was sentenced Friday to 10 years in state prison in connection with the seizure of 2 kilograms of heroin during a search of his son's apartment in Edgewater last year.

With 569 days of jail credit for time already spent behind bars, Miguel Angel Guzman-Nieves, 50, will likely only have to serve about five months more in prison before he is turned over to federal immigration officials to face deportation proceedings, said his attorney, Perry Primavera.

As his tearful wife and three of his children watched in the gallery, state Superior Court Judge Liliana S. DeAvila Silebi imposed the 10-year term with a two-year period before he is eligible for parole.

Guzman-Nieves, speaking through an interpreter, asked the judge to "give me another chance" to be reunited with his family.

His lawyer told the judge, "My client stands here ashamed of his conduct." He has lost his dignity, the attorney said, "but he has not lost the love of his family. …
