Aerial Show: QB Sets Mark in Ru Victory

PISCATAWAY -- Mike Teel's congratulatory message to Gary Nova was as straight as some of the spirals Teel threw when he was quarterbacking Rutgers.

"I told him, 'Records are made to be broken,' " Teel said Saturday after Nova set the RU mark for career touchdown passes Saturday in the Scarlet Knights' 31-6 win over Tulane.

Teel, a graduate assistant coach for Rutgers, threw 59 TD passes from 2005-08. By throwing four scoring passes against a Tulane defense bent on containing Rutgers' running game, Nova upped his total to 61.

Don Bosco's imprint was all over Rutgers' special day. Teel and Nova both played for the Bergen County high school power, as did Leonte Carroo, who caught three of Nova's scoring passes.

"It means a lot that it's another Bosco guy," said Teel.

It means even more to Nova because he, like

Teel, has had his share of ups and downs in his career. Like Teel, he hasn't always been the favorite of Scarlet Knights fans. For every TD pass that prompted cheers, there's been nearly an interception that prompted boos.

"He's a guy who's gone through the same things I have," Nova said of Teel.

On this day, Nova heard nothing but cheers. He completed his first nine passes in steering the Scarlet Knights to a 21-6 halftime lead, and his only interception came in the third quarter. The senior from Elmwood Park finished 14-of-21 for 291 yards.

"Gary is not perfect, but he's played a lot of good football here," said Rutgers coach Kyle Flood.

There were a lot of Scarlet Knights who played well in the final non-conference game of the season. Rutgers is 4-1 headed into seven Big Ten games, beginning with Michigan on Saturday night, at Ohio State, at Nebraska and Wisconsin.

Tulane (1-4) played Russian roulette defensively and got burned. The Green Wave loaded the box, even though Paul James, RU's best runner, is lost for the season with a knee injury suffered against Navy the week before. …
