Park Ridge police Lt. Nick Errico is on a mission: to turn Bergen County pink, one hat at a time.

The Police Department and 13 others in Bergen County are wearing pink caps in October for breast cancer awareness.

"Who's more visible out there than us?" Errico said. "People will stop to say 'I love the hat.' "

The hats hit close to home for the lieutenant, whose wife, Carla, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 -- six years after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer.

She hadn't been feeling well and went to the doctor, who told her she had Stage 3 breast cancer. She went through surgery, chemotherapy and radiation before being declared cancer-free five years later.

In 2012, Errico approached Chief Joseph Madden -- could the borough's officers switch their blue caps for pink ones? They raised about $7,000 for charity that year.

Since then, the campaign has grown. Six other departments participated last year, raising about $16,000 and a matching contribution from a Park Ridge resident. …
