Steinbrenner Issues Apology to Fan Base

Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner apologized to fans for his club's failure to reach October, though he's optimistic that a veteran corps would rebound in 2015.

"I apologize. We did not do the job this year," Steinbrenner said Wednesday on Michael Kay's ESPN Radio program. "We know what you expect of us and we expect the same thing of ourselves."

As for the looming return of Alex Rodriguez, Steinbrenner said he had no expectations except to move on from the hard feelings associated with the third baseman's year-long MLB ban for steroids.

"He's working very hard as we speak. He always comes into camp fit," Steinbrenner said. "But he's also at the age he's at, with two operations on the hips and hasn't played baseball for over a year.

"Let's just hope he's healthy and let's try to put the past behind. If he's healthy he can contribute ... he's an asset [and] we need the hitting."

Reviewing a "frustrating" and "disappointing" season -- the Yanks' second straight year out of the playoffs after participating in 17 of the previous 18 Octobers -- Steinbrenner cited "another above-average injury year" as a cause. …
