Hawthorne's Pick for Schools Chief Has Familiar Name

HAWTHORNE -- Richard A. Spirito Jr. will follow in the footsteps of his father when he takes his post in January as the new superintendent of schools in the K-12 district.

The borough resident was appointed by the Board of Education at a special meeting on Monday, with a contract from Jan. 1, 2015, through June 30, 2019, at a starting salary of $157,000.

Spirito has four children attending school in Hawthorne and also went through the public district and is a Hawthorne High School graduate.

In overseeing the district of five schools, with an enrollment of 2,500 and a $38 million annual budget, he can look to predecessors including his father, Richard Spirito, who served as the district's chief.

Board of Education President Michele Hyams said the board received eight applications and interviewed two candidates.

"He's very personable and impressed us," Hyams said. "His vision is the same as the board's in moving the district forward and keeping up on current curriculum and current trends in education. …
